Be the Cutest Pilgrim Girl this Thanksgiving 2009!

I assume that mom’s and dad’s are now preparing for Thanksgiving. If your kids are still young then more than likely they will be having a school play or a big holiday turkey feast. Holidays seem to come and go so quickly that before you know it will be Christmas time again. So whenever possible it does not hurt to cut some corners and purchase your child’s costume now.

The first Thanksgiving took place back in 1621 when the colonists sailing on the Mayflower landed on Plymouth Rock. It has since become a nationally celebrated holiday that both children and adults enjoy. On this day of thanks the pilgrims and the indians joined together to eat from their bountiful harvest of vegetables. The men went hunting for wild fowl and deer. And then they all gathered together to eat a wonderful dinner with one another.

A classic colonial girl costume includes a long dress, apron and a bonnet. Moms, sure you can make a dress but if you do not have the time or have no clue how to sew then you can’t go wrong with purchasing one of ttraditional-colonial-girl-costumehese complete pilgrim girl costume kits. You will get all that you need for your daughter’s school character for her play or classroom activity.

This traditional style of dress is designed with an oversized collar, cuffs and an attached apron. Choose any standard pair of church shoes. Black dress shoes match the best with this style of costume.

No real pilgrim girl costume is complete without the traditional bonnet. It is worn with both women and girl pilgrim dresses. A head scarf wraps around your head and is easily tied around your neck and then under your chin in a neat bow. Be careful not to tie your bow too tight though or it will be uncomfortable, especially to little girls. Be sure to read or inquire about your costume kit headscarf because many bonnet’s tend to run either too small or just a tiny bit big. If your child’s headpiece is too large or keeps falling off then you may try using bobby pins or hair clips to fasten it to your little girls hair. I think the toughest part to any outfit is trying to get your child to keep his or her headpiece on and in place.

Although your children have their own holiday fun either at school or at a party it is always a great way to have some family fun too. Have your kids dress up in their colonial or native american costume and participate with some at home crafts. Children love to make crafts and create something special. They can make their own pilgrim hat out of construction paper. The only requirements for this simple prop is a pair of scissors, glue, and of course, the construction paper. The boys can make indian feather headpieces and the girls pilgrim hats. Let’s your children’s imagination run wild.
